Working as a CD art designer has landed me some of my favorite projects. Here is an example of that work, a digital download single from the American Country Hits series. Top Nashville studio musicians recorded a new cover version of the Thompson Square hit song “Are You Gonna Kiss Me Or Not?” Wellington Beck just needed the perfect album art to complete the project.
CD art designer – country music album art story
The label requested that I include a vintage couch and red grunge background in the artwork layout. Both the couch and red wall hearken back to the original version’s layout. I chose the perfect royalty free stock photo of a drab, floral patterned couch. Then, I desaturated the image, so the vintage seat appeared even more dingy. Finally, the bright red wall with an inner shadow effect makes it stand out.
I chose a tall, bold sans serif font in an off white hue for the title. To simulate letterpress blocks, I also isolated each letter and jumbled the words. I then added some grunge in order to distress them. The words “Or Not?” are colored a darker brown at the bottom, in order to add emphasis to the question posed by the title. Any CD art designer worth their salt will stress how important it is to choose the right fonts and style them properly.
All of these elements come together to complete the “shabby chic” feel. My clients loved it and told me it was the perfect call back to the original song’s art. This CD is available for download and physical purchase from outlets such as Amazon.com and iTunes.
